Wilton Rebolo has made history in Australia. The 27-year-old has become the first Brazilian player to appear in Super Rugby after starting at tighthead prop for the Western Force in their home game against the Chiefs. Rebolo was a late addition to the lineup when Argentine international Santiago Medrano pulled out before kickoff with a sternum injury.
The historic moment comes six months after it was announced that Rebolo had signed with the Force from Major League Rugby side Rugby New York. Former Brazil flyhalf David Harvey had previously lined up for the Force in 2012 but didn’t make his international debut until 2015.
It’s unclear when Rebolo’s contract with the Force will expire but an official release at the time of his signing indicated that the deal was ‘long-term’, suggesting he will return for a second season in 2024. The Force closed the regular season in 10th spot overall with a record of 5 wins and 9 defeats.
