Argentina finished second at the Singapore Sevens. Los Pumas 7’s were narrowly beaten 19-17 by champions New Zealand in the Final. The final was a match that both teams had the opportunity to win. Ultimately, New Zealand’s defense meant Argentina did not come away with as many tries as may have otherwise been the case.
Argentina enjoyed a solid campaign overall. They began with a 10-0 win over Ireland on Friday. Game two saw a big 42-7 win over Japan and a hard-fought 19-17 win over Great Britain. It came with an Marcos Moneta interception in the final seconds.
Following the pool matches Los Pumas 7’s went from strength to strength. Argentina powered past Australia to complete an impressive 29-12 victory. Then came the Semi Final. Los Pumas 7’s were up against Samoa. The Pacific Islanders had reached the final four with an upset win over Fiji. In a match that went into overtime, Argentina pulled-off a 24-19 victory.
Argentina pushed New Zealand in the final but fell short. The South Americans got over the line with Joaquín Pellandini, Marcos Moneta and Germán Schulz scoring in the try zone.
In claiming the title New Zealand add 22 competition points to their total in the overall season standings. Argentina remain in second place, behind New Zealand. Los Pumas 7’s gained 19 points for finishing second.
Canada, Uruguay and the USA were also involved in the Singapore Sevens. The North Americans faced-off in the 13th Place Final. The Eagles’ won the contest 22-17. The USA started the tournament with a 24-21 loss against Uruguay. Los Teros 7’s also defeated Kenya in the pool as did the USA.
New Zealand lead the 2023 Sevens Series with 164 points. Argentina have 140 while Fiji are third with 130 points. France, Australia, Samoa and South Africa all have over 100 competition points. This means that Argentina still have a lot to play for in the remaining competitions in London, UK and Toulouse, France.
