With Peñarol in hot pursuit of Los Dogos‘ spot at the top of the Super Rugby Americas table, the Córdoba side responded well on Friday. Los Dogos completed an away win over the American Raptors at Infinity Park in Colorado.
It was all Los Dogos early on. First Juan Bautista Boronio opened the scoring with a penalty and then the Argentines ran in three rapid-fire tries. Hooker Boris Wenger scored a double and Juan Bautista Boronio provided a sharp support run to score the other.
The 24-0 scoresheet was ugly reading for the American Raptors. The match changed in the second quarter though. Tries to prop Payton Telea-Ilalio and flanker Tommy Clark saw the lad narrowed to ten points at the conclusion of the opening half.
Los Dogos were ahead without being in control. Accurate goal-kicking and clearance kicking from Boronio was an important factor in the Argentine side’s performance. This continued for much of the second half.
Leandro Gea Salim opened the second-half scoring. A slight step to his left saw him through a gap to score. Former Pumas hooker Diego Fortuny then touched down as did Uruguayan Diego Magno. Fortuny and Magno’s tries for the Raptors got them back to within one score.
Replacement Felipe Mallía slotted two penalties to seal the win for Los Dogos. Despite holding a 13 point lead, Los Dogos were made to work until the final whistle. Handling errors in the final ten minutes meant it was not a case of seeing the match out until the final siren.
The match was the first of six consecutive home games for the Raptors. They face Os Cobras next-up on April 02.
