A touring part of fourteen Argentine men’s players has been named for the upcoming Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. The competition is to be the second edition after rugby debuted four years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico. The top rated South American side, Argentina won Silver, losing to Canada in the final.
The squad is training today at Club Champagnat in Buenos Aires as is the women’s squad. Both will depart Argentina next Wednesday, flying to Toronto where they will complete preparations for the games and remain there until July 14.
Rugby Sevens competition at the Pan American Games will be played over two days and feature eight competitors. Joining the automatic qualifiers of Argentina, Canada and the USA will be Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Guyana and Uruguay. Teams are divided into two pools of four.
Missing is Santiago Cordero who is expected to feature in the Rugby Championship and Rugby World Cup. Prior to Manuel Montero’s season ending injury on the speedster was expected to travel to Toronto. Instead he is now to have added importance in joining senior wingers Horacio Agulla, Lucas González Amorosino, Juan Imhoff and the likely returning Gonzalo Camacho.
In analyzing what lays ahead Los Pumas Sevens captain Gastón Revol commented that “we have the highest expectations. It will be a tough competition, because it is to feature the strongest teams from South American and two great teams, that are playing incredibly well right now, in the United States and Canada. It will be really tough, but we have a lot of faith in the work that we have been doing and in the squad. I believe that we deserve to finish the season in the best manner and that it is best for us to have a good Pan American Games”.
