Argentina barge into Quarter Finals at waterlogged LA 7s

Argentina is the only Americas team to qualify for the Cup Quarter Finals at the Los Angeles Sevens. Play was affected heavily by the conditions as rain pounded into Dignity Health Sports Park all day long. It caused several delays, with the games stretching well into the evening as a result.

Los Pumas lost a heart-breaker to Great Britain by just two points in the tournament opener. They bounced back with a strong performance against France, and wrapped up second spot in Pool D with a convincing win over Spain.

The USA struggled on home turf, falling behind 21-nil to Samoa in their loss against Samoa. That was followed by a heavy defeat to New Zealand. Their only victory came over Chile, and required a last-gasp solo effort from Gavan D’Amore-Morrison to salvage the result.

A young Cóndores squad were outclassed by New Zealand and Samoa, though they did manage to score one try in each. Marcelo Torrealba’s conversion of his own try looked to have stolen a win over the Eagles before D’Amore-Morrison’s heroics.

It was mixed results for Los Teros. Ireland scored the only try of their first match in stoppage time, but then Bautista Basso’s sliding score earned a famous come-from-behind win over South Africa. Uruguay would fall flat against Canada, however, conceding three second half tries that cost them a potential Quarter Final spot.

That was the only positive result for the Canucks, which included a double from Jake Thiel. In fact the 26 points against Los Teros was the only scoring of the day as the Canadians were shut out first by South Africa and then Ireland.

Samoa will be Argentina’s opponent in the first Quarter Final on Day Two. Before that will see the other four Americas teams competing in the 9th Place draw. The USA are up first against Spain, followed by Canada versus Kenya, Chile against France, and Uruguay opposite Japan.
