USA and Canada set to play in Spain Women’s tourney

Spain are in advanced talks to host a four-team international women’s tournament featuring Canada, South Africa, and the USA. The competition is set to be played during the Women’s Six Nations window in late March and early April. Current Spain under-20 coach and former Leonas captain Aroa González confirmed the news earlier this week.

The matches would be the first internationals for Canada and the USA since last year’s World Cup in New Zealand. Last year saw them playing in the Pacific Four tournament with Australia and New Zealand, but there has been no 2023 edition announced by World Rugby as of yet.

While the USA should be able to call upon several stars based in England’s Premier 15s competition, Canada’s overseas contingent has diminished since the World Cup. There are currently three Canadian backs playing club rugby in Spain – Magali Harvey, Sabrina Poulin, and Caroline Crossley.

Canada currently sit 4th on the World Rugby Rankings, with the USA sitting in 7th. Spain are ranked 11th with South Africa not far behind in 13th.
