Make it back-to-back Bronze for the Women’s Eagles on the World Sevens Series. The USA defeated Ireland to finish 3rd in Cape Town and build an 8-point buffer in the race for automatic Olympic Qualification. A shorthanded Canadian side finished in 8th spot, one better than Dubai, while Brazil broke their losing streak to claim 9th.
Emerging superstar Maddison Levi claimed a hat-trick as Australia blitzed the Eagles in the Semi Final. They shook off the disappointment and Sam Sullivan’s second try was enough to lead them past Ireland to come away with 16 competitions points. New Zealand would ultimately overwhelm the Australians to secure the Cup Final win, with Tyla Nathan-Wong grabbing a double.
Canada were forced to play their final games of the tournament with just 8 fit players. The exhaustion took its toll, with France forcing extra time in the 5th Place Semi Final and ultimately stealing the result. Fiji had too much petrol in the tank as they secured a convincing victory in the 7th Place Final.
Brazil finally got on the win-board this season as they ran out to a 17-nil halftime lead over Japan in the 9th Place Semi Final and would hold on for the victory. The same score was in Brazil’s favor early in the second half against Spain, with Thalia Costa touching down twice to wrap up a three-spot improvement for As Yaras from Dubai.
The Series now goes on hiatus until January 21 in Hamilton, New Zealand.
