Brazil ended 2022 on a high. Os Tupis defeated Paraguay 34-19 to finish the Cross Border tournament in Asunción, Paraguay. The match was officially contested between the national ‘A’ sides, though the line-ups were that of the national test teams. The status of the match was uncapped.
Played at the Estádio Héroes de Curupayti, Brazil outscored Paraguay by four tries to three. In doing so Brazil claimed their first win of the Cross Border. Paraguay were winners over Tucumán in their previous fixture.
Brazil led for most of the match. Center Robert Tenório opened the scoring with a try. Paraguay hit-back through a center of their own; Baltazar Ozú touched down in the try zone. Lucas Tranquez struck a penalty to restore Brazil’s lead though Paraguay finished the half in the lead with winger Federico Gauna scoring.
The visitors took control of the match in the second half. Robert Tenório made an impressive break from a lineout for a try. Replacement hooker Leonardo Silva then scored twice. Both were from lineout to maul moves. Gauna hit back to the first for Paraguay. His second try was Paraguay’s final points. Tranquez responded with a penalty before Silva scored his second.
Córdoba won the Cross Border tournament. The Argentine province went undefeated in the competition. They sealed the title with an 18-9 win over Tucumán on Saturday.
