Former Eagles flanker Tony Lamborn has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 31. He made the announcement on social media, bringing a close to an 11-year career as a professional.
“I’ve officially hung up the boots and couldn’t be more stoked with what I have accomplished. There’s so many people to thank I couldn’t fit them all on here. You’ll find me down at Havelock North Rugby Club with a beer in my hand cheering on the club that helped me all the way.”
Originally from Timaru, New Zealand, Lamborn qualified for the USA through his American father. He made his test debut against Italy in 2016 and would go on to earn selection to the 2019 World Cup, finishing with 23 test caps.
After starting his senior provincial career with North Otago in 2012, Lamborn moved to Hawke’s Bay in 2013 Hawke’s Bay before switching to Southland five years later. He also played Super Rugby with the Hurricanes and Blues. His only professional rugby overseas would be brief spells with the San Diego Legion and NOLA Gold in Major League Rugby.
