Argentina and Uruguay have qualified for the 2023 Pan American Games. They are now confirmed to join hosts Chile in competing in the eight team event in Santiago, Chile. One more spot for a South American competitor will be confirmed in December while four from North America will qualify next month.
Argentina was expected to get through the competition relatively easily. As the powerhouses of men’s rugby in the Americas, Argentina are the benchmark for all others. They are a team that the opposition fear and respect but also the team that they so greatly anticipate playing against.
Los Pumas 7’s won the tournament with a 19-7 victory over Chile. Los Cóndores needed not qualify for the Pan American Games. As the host nation, Chile went into the qualifying tournament already with their spot confirmed.
Uruguay were seeded as the team to join Argentina in qualifying for Santiago 2023. This is what transpired. Uruguay’s 12-10 win over Brazil on day one was a key result; nonetheless, the Bronze Final outcome of Uruguay winning 19-12 was the all-important fixture.
Peru finished the men’s competition in seventh, and bottom. Fifth place went to Colombia who defeated hosts Paraguay 21-10. The result of the Bronze Final meant Brazil finished fourth.
