Australia slide past USA on way to RWC Sevens title

Australia have reclaimed the Rugby World Cup Sevens title. The 2016 Olympic champions claimed their second Women’s tournament Championship win by edging New Zealand 24-22, having defeated the USA 17-7 in the Semi Final.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for teams from the Americas. Canada impressed with a 22-7 win over England to start things off, but were then comprehensively beaten by Fiji in their final match of the competition. The USA couldn’t get over the Semi Final loss and also fell off in their last match with a one-sided loss to France.

Colombia finished at the bottom of the table after coming up just short to Madagascar, though they did make things interesting with two second-half tries. Brazil held on to beat Spain in the 11th place Final.

Preparations will soon begin for the 2022-2023 World Sevens Series. The Women will start a month later than the men, with the opening tournament in Dubai on December 2. This year’s circuit will double as an Olympic qualifier with the top four teams qualifying directly for Paris 2024.
