USA defeat Canada to advance to World Cup Semi Final

The USA will play in the Semi Final of the Rugby World Cup Sevens on Sunday. A 10-7 win over Canada sees the Women’s Eagles as the only team from the Americas still in contention for a title at the tournament in Cape Town.

Jaz Gray finished off a long sequence on attack to put the USA in an early lead. The Canadians fired back early in the second half through Keyara Wardley with the conversion from Olivia Apps nudging them ahead by two. Ilona Maher showed her strength to score with two defenders on her back for the decisive try with two minutes to play.

It was the only match of the day for the North American teams. Canada will now play England in the 5th place Semi Final. The USA’s opponent in the Championship Semi Final will be World Sevens Series winners Australia. The other Championship Semi Final will see New Zealand taking on France.

Gabriela Lima scored two tries as Brazil shut out Colombia in the Challenge Quarter Finals. The Colombians would fail to score a single point on Day Two as they then fell to South Africa. As Yaras scored two tries against Japan but it wasn’t enough in the Challenge Semi Finals. Colombia will close out their tournament against Madagascar, with Brazil to play Spain on Day Three.
