San Diego Legion flanker Michael Smith will switch his focus from rugby to education for the next four years. The Canadian international has accepted a position in the UBC Island Medical Program with an anticipated graduation in 2026.
Smith had an exceptional season for the Legion in 2022, playing in 16 of 17 matches including 13 starts. He was voted the club’s Player of the Season by his teammates in just his second year as a professional. At international level he has been a regular in Canada’s match day squads since debuting against Wales in July 2021 and now has 7 test caps.
The 24-year-old notes that he will not be stepping away from rugby entirely. He will be based in Victoria and intends to continue training at Rugby Canada’s high performance facility, though his international availability will be determined by his school commitments. Smith’s contract with the Legion is up but he has not ruled out late-season appearances in Major League Rugby as his schooling allows.
