Canada’s women’s team split their two matches on the opening day of the Rugby Sevens event at the Commonwealth Games. In the men’s bracket, Canada finished Day One with an identical record while Jamaica struggled with two heavy defeats.
Favorites New Zealand were too much for the Canadians in the first women’s match. The Black Ferns scored seven tries in the 45-7 result, with Chloe Daniels registering Canada’s only try. A double from Bianca Farella led the way to a 26-19 win over England in their second match.
Over on the men’s side things started well with Alex Russell contributing two tries in a 31-nil win over Wales. In the second match Fiji pulled away to a 19-5 halftime lead, and held on despite conceding a penalty try and yellow card with two minutes to play in the second half.
Samu Kerevi scored a hat-trick for Australia as they blitzed Jamaica 62-nil to start their account. Seven different players touched down for Kenya in the 45-nil result of the second match.
Day Two will see Canada’s women starting off against Sri Lanka, while the men will face Zambia. Jamaica’s final pool match will be against Uganda.
