Referees have been assigned for the 2022 Rugby Championship. The annual competition involving Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will take place in August and September. Makes will be officiated by referees from the unions of Australia, England, France, Georgia, New Zealand, and Scotland.
World Rugby‘s announcement stated that
“reflects the selectors’ ambition of giving all referees exposure to the biggest competitions in 2022 as preparation for Rugby World Cup 2023 in France.”
Like all prior Rugby Championship tournaments, the 2022 one will see no matches referees by an Argentine. There will also be no Spanish-speaking officials refereeing matches. This follows South America’s move to professionalism wherein there are full-time professional referees who are bilingual.
Chile’s qualification for RWC 2023 to join Argentina and Uruguay to give the continent with a record three competitors at a Rugby World Cup begs the question of where are the bilingual referees? Argentina will face Chile in a RWC match in 2023.
