Chile will play in four different French cities at Rugby World Cup 2023. The South Americans will play their pool matches in Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lille and Nantes.
Los Cóndores qualified as Americas 2 and will thus compete in Pool D alongside Argentina, England, Japan, and Samoa. The leading two performers of the five teams will advance to the knock-out stages of the tournament.
Chile will begin their campaign on Sunday, September 10 in Toulouse. Los Cóndores will do so against Japan, a team that Chile has never played a test match against. The match will be the first RWC fixture between the Asian country and an Americas competitor since RWC 2015. It will be the first between Japan and a South American opponent since Argentina at RWC 1999.
Los Cóndores will stay in France’s south west for their second match. It will be following five rest days. Preparing for this demanding schedule may require rotation. The opponent will be Samoa, another country in which Chile has no prior international competition in the form of capped test matches.
The Samoan assignment will be on Saturday, September 16. The third and fourth matches will also be Saturday fixtures. Chile will face England in France’s far north on September 23. It is to also be a first; Chile have no prior test matches against England. Lille will also host England’s match against Samoa later on during the pool stage.
Chile’s fourth pool match will be Nantes. It is to be historic; an all-South American fixture will take place at a Rugby World Cup. Los Cóndores will face Los Pumas in Nantes. International competition between Chile and Argentina dates back to 1936. 39 matches have taken place between Argentina and Chile and many others between teams deemed Argentina XV, Argentina ‘A’ or similar. Argentina are undefeated in test matches against Chile though the Argentina XV lost to Chile in 2021.
