Diego Magno will make history against Romania on Saturday. The Uruguayan will earn his 100th test cap. In doing so, Magno will become the first Americas player to reach 100 test caps.
Magno has been playing test match rugby since 2008. He made his debut that year against Russia. His first test start came in 2010 against Brazil. Since then he has been a mainstayt in Los Teros.
The attributed of the player mean that he is able to move between flanker, N8 and second-row. He has test starts in all three positions for Uruguay. Since RWC 2015, Magno has almost permanently been used in the second-row. He did, however, play regularly at N8 for the Houston SaberCats in Major League Rugby.
Magno reaches 100 caps at the age of 33. He played in Rugby World Cups 2015 and 2019. He is now back based in Uruguay and is on target for a third Rugby World Cup. The MVCC product has 12 test tries, the most recent of which was against Japan in Tokyo last month.
Additional Americas players may reach 100 test caps in 2022. They are Argentine hooker Agustín Creevy and fly half Nicolás Sánchez. Creevy was Argentina’s most capped player in 2019. His most recent cap, this past Saturday in Jujuy, was his 90th. Sánchez now has the Argentine record of 94 caps.
Los Pumas will play 12 test matches in 2022. If Creevy plays in 11 of the 12 he will reach 100 caps in 2022. If Sánchez appears in 7 of the 12 he will reach the mark.
While no Puma has reached the mark of 100 test caps there are two Argentine players who have more than 100 caps for Italy. Sergio Parisse has 142 caps and may earn more. Martín Castrogiovanni retired with 119 caps to his name. Both Parisse and Castrogiovanni learned their rugby in Argentina.
