Newcastle Falcons Recruit Matías Moroni from Leicester Tigers

Matías Moroni is no longer a Leicester Tiger. The Puma will continue his career in the English Premiership but further north. The Newcastle Falcons have recruited the 31-year-old on s two-year-deal, doing so just days after he won the English Premiership title.

Moroni will join the Newcastle Falcons following international duty. Moroni was a late call-up to Los Pumas’ roster for the upcoming home test matches against Scotland. The July series will be followed by the Rugby Championship.

The Northern Argentine cities of Jujuy, Salta and Santiago del Estero will play host to Argentina vs Scotland. Moroni and his now former Leicester Tigers’ teammate, Julián Montoya are on the roster. Newcastle Falcons center, Matías Orlando is also on the roster.

Moroni and Orlando join fellow English Premiership player Lucio Cinti as three of the five centers on the roster. The other two are the French-based Jerónimo de la Fuente and Juan Cruz Mallía.

The highly experienced Moroni moves to Newcastle with 57 caps to his name. This is notably more so than Cinti (7) and Mallía (13). Moroni played at RWC 2015, starting against Namibia on the right wing and against Tonga, Ireland and South Africa at outside center. He played on the right wing at RWC 2019 but has firmly been used in his natural position of outside center in England.

Moroni moved to England due the end of Argentina in Super Rugby. He had been the starting right winger for Los Jaguares based on the needs of the team. de la Fuente and Orlando were the regular starting centers while leading wingers were already based abroad.

The Newcastle Falcons are home to USA lock Greg Peterson in addition to Pumas center Matías Orlando and winger Mateo Carreras. The latter made his test debut in 2022 for his country.
