New Zealand claimed victory at Toulouse in the final women’s event of the 2022 World Sevens Series. They defeated Australia, who had already claimed the overall series title, in a Cup Final decided by one score. Canada, the USA, and Brazil finished in 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.
For Brazil the result means relegation from Core Status on the circuit. They were first defeated by France and then the USA on Day Three. As Yaras finished two points behind 10th-place Spain. It’s unclear at this stage if Russia’s suspension will continue to next season or how that might affect Core teams.
The USA were defeated by Canada in the second 5th Place Semi Final. They would defeat Brazil by three tries to one in their final game of the season. With New Zealand’s points total adjusted due to their inability to play in the first four tournaments, the Eagles finish one point behind on the overall standings in 6th place.
Canada would ultimately fall to hosts France in the 5th Place Final. An improved showing in the second half of the season sees them finishing in 7th spot though well behind the USA. Russia’s sanctioning sees them three points behind in 8th, with England seven points back in 9th.
The Canadians will now turn their attention to the Commonwealth Games which will take place at Coventry Stadium in England beginning on July 29. Cape Town, South Africa, will host the Rugby World Cup Sevens that kicks off on September 9.
