The Toronto Arrows cruised to a 57-0 win over the Dallas Jackals at York Lions Stadium on Saturday evening. Seven different players touched down in a match that resembled a training run at times, the home side scoring 43 points in the first half alone before taking their foot off the gas.
Ross Braude made a welcome return to Toronto’s lineup and the scrumhalf made an instant impact. His line break put the Jackals on the back foot, and when they conceded a penalty Braude went quick and reached out of a tackle for the first try.
Will Kelly knocked over a penalty goal after Tomás de la Vega had slipped through. Dallas got some possession in their own end but couldn’t make any progress. A high ball was taken cleanly by Gastón Mieres and the fullback raced 45 meters for what looked a cracking try, only for the TMO to interject with a mysterious knock-on call.
The Arrows paid no mind and a minute later were over the line again, this time via the driving maul with James O’Neill on the end. A hard line from Guiseppe du Toit caught the defense napping for another try. From the restart Adrian Wadden broke away, with Ronan Foley in support for a runaway score.
Mieres would get his due at the half-hour mark, popping up on Braude’s shoulder to slip through the middle. Lolani Faleiva would make it six tries in the first half for Toronto as the big prop was simply too powerful to be stopped from a penalty play.
Both teams cleared their bench in the second half which disrupted continuity. Toronto would score two more tries, both from Jack McRogers at the end of rolling mauls. Kelly would finish the day 8 from 9 off the kicking tee for a personal haul of 17 points.
It’s a short turnaround for the Arrows as they host the high-flying Free Jacks on Thursday night. Dallas are also at home to play the LA Giltinis on Saturday.
