Former Springbok and Austin Elite player-coach Pedrie Wannenburg has died. The 41-year-old was tragically struck while driving his vehicle by a speeding car involved in a police chase. His wife and two children were also in the vehicle, with his 8-year-old son hospitalized.
Wannenburg won 20 caps for South Africa and was a Super Rugby centurion before continuing his professional career in Europe. He moved to the USA in 2016 to play for the Denver Stampede in PRO Rugby, and was a player-coach for Austin Elite in 2018.
A resident of Houston, Wannenburg’s contributions to American rugby did not stop with his retirement. He was named Head Coach of West Houston Lions in 2020 and more recently coached the Rice University Men’s side, while also helping the SaberCats development side – Rugby HTX.
