SLAR 2022 Wide Open as Peñarol defeat Jaguares XV

SLAR 2022 is wide open. Los Jaguares XV were undefeated in SLAR 2021 but now find themselves in 4th position after four rounds of the 2022 season. The 2021 beaten finalists Peñarol made history on Saturday by defeating Los Jaguares XV for the first time.

Peñarol were deserved 27-20 winners. The Uruguayans won by scoring three tries while conceding two. They had the better of play in general and excelled in the lineout, maul and defensively. The Argentine side was guilty of discipline with two forwards being yellow carded.

Peñarol opened the scoring early. Felipe Etcheverry landed a 3rd minute penalty. The lead did not last long as Bautista Pedemonte crossed for the game’s opening try. The N8 was on hand for a pass from Gerónimo Prisciantelli who took his own up-and-under. The score would prove to be an isolated try as Peñarol scored three of their own before Los Jaguares XV would score their next.

Captain Andrés Vilaseca spotted a gap to score Peñarol’s first. Second-rower come flanker Manuel Bernstein was caught wide of the ruck area as Vilaseca burst through to score off a 24 meter run.

Competition for places in Uruguay’s test team back-line is red hot. A case in point is wing with established names and newcomers since RWC 2019 giving greater depth than even before in the position. A case in point is Mateo Viñals. His 29th minute try put Peñarol in a strong position.

Viñals finished off an excellent move wherein Felipe Etcheverry broke the line in an angled run before passing infield to Viñals. The winger had a strong SLAR 2021 season yet presently has just one test cap to his name.

The form hooker so far in SLAR 2022 has been hooker Guillermo Pujadas. He started games one through three but was on the bench today against Los Jaguares XV. He came on to make an impact. He attached to an attacking maul to score Peñarol’s third try. The 55th minute effort had the Uruguayans in firm control.

Los Jaguares XV fought back to score the game’s final try. Captain Tomás Cubilla showed good strength and execution to get away from tackles and over the line for a try. With the conversion on target the game was poised for a 7 point finish.

The Argentines had time to score again but were unable to executive. Peñarol’s win takes them to top spot in SLAR 2022. They are tied with Selknam on 14 points ahead of the Olímpia Lions on 13. Los Jaguares XV are now in 4th on 11 points.
