Uruguay will have a player involved for Selknam in the upcoming Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) season. Uruguay ‘A’ fly half Juan Zuccarino is to play for the Chilean franchise in the 2022 competition.
Zuccarino played for Uruguay ‘A’ in the 2021 Americas Pacific Challenge. He was the starting fly half in the match against the Argentina XV. The roster also contained Matías D’Avanzo, a player likely to feature for Peñarol as the understudy to Felipe Etcheverry.
Etcheverry sat out the 2021 SLAR season with injury. Argentine Martín Roger started at fly half for Peñarol. He now plays his rugby in Italy. With no Roger and Zuccarino playing for Selknam, Uruguay are set to have additional names in the pivotal position getting game time in the 2022 SLAR season. In 2021 there was no Uruguayan fly half option getting regular gametime in the league.
Zuccarino will also aid Chile’s preparations for the RWC 2023 qualifiers against the USA. Having the Uruguayan on the roster will enable player rotation. Zuccarino can function as a utility back. The Selknam recruit is a product of MVCC, the world’s oldest rugby club outside of Europe.
