Harry Bennett announces retirement ahead of MLR season

Harry Bennett will not be suiting up for Rugby New York this season after all. The club announced his re-signing in December but the 31-year-old Australia has instead opted to hang up the boots. He posted a statement on social media which reads in part:

“Massive thank you to everyone at Rugby United New York throughout my time at the club! Particularly this past season! It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey but to say I had the privilege to play professional rugby in the worlds greatest city is worth every bit of it.

“A massive shoutout to all my teammates for listening to my dribble chat every day. The relationships you build playing this amazing sport last a lifetime and I’m fortunate enough to say I have made plenty.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this decision to retire was that I made it on my own terms. Proud to say I gave it everything all the way to the end.”

Bennett first played professionally in the USA with the Sacramento Express in the 2016 PRO Rugby season. He then moved to New York and has been with the team since their inception, playing 31 games across three MLR campaigns. He was called up to the USA Selects squad for the Americas Pacific Challenge in 2018 but ultimately did not make the trip to Montevideo.

New York remain well covered at flyhalf with Jack Heighton arriving from New Zealand and Sam Windsor making the switch from Houston. Jason Emery, another import from New Zealand, is primarily a center but has also played No10 for Sanix Blues in the Japan Top League on several occasions.
