The Dallas Jackals have announced the signing of utility back Campbell Johnstone and second or back row forward Sam Phillips. Both join the Major League Rugby expansion side from the American Raptors who have been competing in the XV Series. The team has revived the Raptors name in recent months having shifted away from being a purely crossover athlete program.
Johnstone initially signed with Dallas in July of last year but did not join another MLR side when the Jackals opted out of the 2021 season. The 23-year-old previously played two games for the Glendale Raptors in 2019. A USA u20 international, he has the ability to play across the backline and is also a useful right-footed goal-kicker.
Phillips is new to rugby having previously played collegiate football for Southern Oklahoma and Louisiana College. The 25-year-old from Longview, Texas, stands 6’5″ (1.95m) and has been signed as a lock but has also featured on the blindside flank for the Raptors.
