Argentina’s Women’s 7’s are now officially known as Las Yaguaretés

Argentina’s Women’s 7’s team is now officially known as Las Yaguaretés. The name was revealed ahead of the upcoming annual South American (SAR) 7’s competition, the Valentín Martínez.

The name refers to the largest feline on the American continent. It was chosen in reference to the spirit of the Argentine players. The announcement was made at Casa Pumas in Buenos Aires where the team is preparing for the tournament in Uruguay with an eye to the 2022 World Cup 7’s in South Africa.

The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) has reported a 121% increase in Women’s rugby playing numbers in Argentina over the past five years. There are officially 6084 females playing rugby in the country. Of them 5142 are of a competitive age of 15 or older.

Las Yaguaretés will compete in the Valentín Martínez on November 12-13 in Montevideo. The competition will take place at the Carrasco Polo Club. Two places are on the line for the 2022 Rugby Sevens World Cup in South Africa.

Argentina will compete against tournament favorites Brazil in Group A. The group also contains Costa Rica, Guatemala and hosts Uruguay. Group B consists of Chile, Colombia, Panama, Paraguay and Peru. Colombia are the favorites in Group B.
