“The King” will soon be wearing Gold. NOLA have enlisted former All Blacks star Carlos Spencer as an Assistant Coach with a focus on skills and attack for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He joins Head Coach Nate Osborne and Forwards Coach Kane Thompson at The Gold Mine.
The 46-year-old Spencer is widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation. He won 35 test caps as a flyhalf for New Zealand between 1997 and 2004, scoring 291 points and earning selection to Rugby World Cup 2003.
Spencer’s professional career began with the Auckland Blues in 2016, the inaugural season of Super Rugby. It continued with Northampton Saints and Gloucester in the English Premiership before he made a surprise return to Super Rugby with the Golden Lions in 2010.
A shift to coaching came with the Lions in 2012, followed by stints with the Sharks and Kings before moving to Japan with Sanix Blues in 2016. In 2019 Spencer joined the Hurricanes as an Assistant Coach but was released from his contract when the pandemic forced the Super Rugby hiatus in 2020.
