South Africa claim Series sweep at Edmonton 7s

South Africa made it a clean sweep of the shortened 2021 World Sevens Series as they completed a perfect run in Edmonton to take their second tournament in as many weeks. Great Britain were their opponents in the Cup Final this time but the Blitzboks were simply too strong with Muller du Plessis and Siviwe Soyizwapi each contributing two tries.

Canada earned a spot in the Semi Finals, much to the delight of the crowd after defeating Ireland in the Quarter Final. Brennig Prevost’s conversion of a last-minute try from Josiah Morra, his second of the game, was enough to put them through. That would be the final win of the event for the home side, however, as they would end in 4th place following defeats to Great Britain and Kenya.

The USA did not enjoy the same success on Day Two as their tournament opening. Three tries from Max McFarland, all converted by Luke Treharne, saw Great Britain edging the Eagles in the Quarter Final. A dominant win followed but it was the tournament’s surprise package, Germany, who took another famous victory in the 5th Place Final.

Chile settled for 10th spot with two Diego Warnken doubles the highlight of their performance. Jamaica got two tries from Mason Caton-Brown in their win over Mexico in the 11th Place Final. Ricardo Ancira’s brace was the only points Las Serpientes would score during the event.

Similarly it was Great Britain who claimed the Women’s Fast Four tournament having also won in Vancouver. The USA had defeated Canada in the Semi Final thanks largely to a hat trick from speedster Jazmine Grey. A remarkable nine different players would score as the Canadians took out their frustrations against Mexico to finish in 3rd place.

The 2022 Sevens Series begins in late November as Dubai hosts back-to-back events with both Men and Women competing. It remains to be seen if the full compliment of teams will partake with many of the world’s best teams unable to compete in Canada due to the ongoing pandemic.
