Pumas wait on Matías Moroni following surgery

Matías Moroni is in doubt for the remainder of the Rugby Championship. The Argentine center / wing suffered a fractured nose in Saturday’s loss against New Zealand in Brisbane. The 30-year-old was a second half replacement. He substituted Santiago Cordero on the wing.

Team selection had Moroni on the bench with a new combination of centers and wingers. Santiago Chocobares and Lucio Cinti formed the mid-field and Emiliano Boffelli and Santiago Cordero were the wingers. The same formula may now take to the field against Australia. Moroni’s status is officially in doubt while Jerónimo de la Fuente, Matías Orlando and winger Bautista Delguy have returned to their clubs to recover from their respective injuries.

Mario Ledesma’s roster contains six centers. Five are those mentioned above with the remaining player being Juan Cruz Mallía. He has started the past three matches at fullback. This suggests that Chocobares and Cinti will again start in the centers and Mallía will provide cover from the back.

Additional possibilities see moving a player from another position. Such a possibility may see Emiliano Boffelli covering outside center. The options at wing and fullback support such a possibility. Even if Santiago Carreras remains at fly half and Mallía at fullback the roster contains five further options for wing and fullback: Sebastián Cancelliere, Santiago Cordero, Ignacio Mendy, Mateo Carreras and Marcos Moneta.

Whether of not Moroni will join them is options is presently unconfirmed. Moroni underwent surgery in Brisbane and is being monitored. Either he will next play against Wallabies in the upcoming two matches or his next match will be for the Leicester Tigers in the English Premiership.
