Delguy, de la Fuente and Orlando return to Europe with injuries

Further injuries have hit Los Pumas. The trio of Bautista Delguy, Jerónimo de la Fuente, and Matías Orlando will not play again in the 2021 Rugby Championship. They are to return to Europe to recover and be available again for their respective clubs of Perpignan and the Newcastle Falcons.

Delguy is out with a torn hamstring. He has been Mario Ledesma’s first choice right winger this year. It is a continuation of the selection from 2020. Emiliano Boffelli and Santiago Cordero will be the starting wingers for Saturday’s match against New Zealand.

de la Fuente will return to Perpignan together with Delguy. The former Jaguares captain has been the starting inside center for Ledesma this year. His unavailability sees Santiago Chocobares in at inside center. It does not come as a surprise; in this short career, Chocobares has demonstrably been a differential center for Argentina.

Matías Orlando was Ledesma’s starting outside center in 2020 and earlier. In 2021, however, injuries have prevented him from playing at all. This has seen Chocobares, and Matías Moroni both starting at outside center. Changes for this coming Saturday see Lucio Cinti named to play outside center. It will be his first test start and it comes with Moroni named on the bench.

The injuries follow those suffered by Facundo Isa and Tomás Cubelli. The former returned from South Africa to France injured while the latter was ruled-out prior to the start of the Rugby Championship. Other players are being monitored. Rodrigo Bruni and Nicolás Sánchez will not face New Zealand this weekend due to injuries.
