Men’s Eagles Sevens captain Madison Hughes has announced that he is taking a break from the game for the time being, though he intends to return in the future. The 28-year-old’s decision comes at the end of an arduous period through the pandemic that concluded with a 6th place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.
“I think it’s the right moment, for both the team and myself, for someone else to step into the captaincy role and take the team forward. I’m not calling this a retirement – I definitely have it in my head that I’ll be back. For now, I need to discover myself off the rugby pitch.”
Hughes has led the team since 2014 and has proven a top class competitor on the World Sevens Series with several Dream Team selections. He steps away with 52 tournaments on the circuit under his belt and five tests caps for the Eagles XVs won between 2016 and 2019.
