Edinburgh sign Argentine backs Boffelli and Moyano

Edinburgh have confirmed the signing of two Argentine backs for the new season. The Scottish capital side will be home to Emiliano Boffelli and Ramiro Moyano. Both players make the move to the United Rugby Championship from the Top 14. Boffelli moves from Racing 92 while Moyano joins Edinburgh from Toulon.

Both players featured for Los Pumas at RWC 2019 and in the 2020 Rugby Championship. The 26-year-old Boffelli departed Argentina for France in January. He played in three of the four matches in what was a Tri Nations in Australia last year. He was set to start against Romania this month only to be ruled-out of the European tour through injury.

Boffelli can play across the backline. He has test starts at fullback and on the wing. He has also moved within matches for specific moves to feature at outside center and fly half. The tall man is a product of Duendes in Rosario. The same club produced fellow Pumas Juan Imhoff and Jerónimo de la Fuente.

Boffelli arrives in Scotland with 31 test caps to his name. 30 of the tests have been starts. His rise to the top culminated his development in Argentina’s High Performance Centers. He played for Argentina at u18, u19 and u20 levels. He was a Pumita at the 2014 and 2014 Junior World Championships. Then in 2016, he was straight into Super Rugby and starting for Los Jaguares as a 21-year-old.

Moyano also has a detailed history of international duty. The 31-year-old from Tucumán played for Argentinas u19s and u20s. His natural position is fullback though he transitioned to wing and thrived. Both he and Boffelli held down starting positions for Los Pumas during the 2016-2019 RWC cycle.

In his 36 caps for Argentina Moyano has 15 test tries. He scored on debut as a replacement at fullback against Chile in 2011. He subsequently played Rugby Sevens for Los Pumas 7’s. This included playing at the 2013 Rugby World Cup in Moscow, Russia.

Moyano and Boffelli started for Los Jaguares in the 2019 Super Rugby Final against the Crusaders. They did so on the right wing and at fullback respectively. Moyano’s next professional club match was for Toulon. He joined the French side following the World Cup in Japan. Now he and Boffelli will reunite at Edinburgh.

Scotland’s other professional rugby team, the Glasgow Warriors has also been recruiting former Jaguares players. Enrique Pieretto joined ahead of last season and remains at the club. Domingo Miotti joined from the Western Force and Sebastián Cancelliere signed from Los Jaguares XV in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR).
