Former Brumbies back row Locky McCaffrey lands in Austin

Locky McCaffrey has finally landed in Austin. The former Brumbies loose forward will at long last join the Gilgronis as he arrived with his family just over a day ago from Japan. It ends a period of uncertainty caused by a lengthy visa delay though the 31-year-old will not be available to play this weekend.

A former Australia u20 representative, McCaffrey boasts a decade of professional experience in Super Rugby, the English Premiership, and Japan’s Top Challenge League. Most notably he spent two seasons with Leicester Tigers and was part of the Brumbies leadership group in 2020.

Meanwhile the AG’s have made three other roster moves. Midfielder Lui Sitama, the 4th-overall pick in the 2020 Collegiate Draft, has moved to Rugby ATL after making just one regular season appearance for Austin. It’s not clear if any financial or other compensation was part of the deal.

Arriving from the Colorado XO’s crossover program is 22-year-old David Still. A linebacker for the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals gridiron team, the powerful 6’3″ (1.90m) athlete has been playing as an outside back in his transition to rugby.

Finally, Patrick Coleman has joined from the Austin Huns. Originally from Frazier Park, California, the 26-year-old is a product of the Santa Barbara Rugby Academy. He was recently named MVP of the Huns and plays both hooker and No8, but projects more as a front row player in MLR.
