Jaguares XV overcome Peñarol to finish regular season unbeaten

Los Jaguares XV were 42-18 winners this evening over Peñarol. The victory sees the Argentine side completing the regular season unbeaten. The win was comfortable, albeit, Peñarol were competitive and were in the game for the majority of the contest.

Los Jaguares XV started with a bang. Pumas flanker Francisco Gorrissen went over for a try in just the second minute. He showed great strength to get through a double tackle. The converted try put Los Jaguares XV 7-0 up and sent a wanring to the opposition.

Peñarol, though, were there to play. The Uruguayan side hit-back witha  try of their own. Rodrigo Silva hit the line from fullback. He made a half break and linked with Mateo Viñals . The right winger then put on afterburners to get past Tomás Albornoz and Teo Castiglioni for the score. Martín Roger missed the sideline conversion attempt.

Albornoz got revenge on Viñals for the next try. He threw a long pass over Viñals which Tomás Cubilla gathered an ran in to score. It was followed by a well-taken solo try from Felipe Ezcurra. The captain took a quick tap penalty from halfway. He attracted defenders and fooled them with a dummy pass before running for an impressive effort.

The remaining first half try was scored by Peñarol. In what was a familiar tactic from Peñarol, replacement hooker Guillermo Pujadas threw a lineout and finished off a rolling-maul. Martín Roger converted and also landed a late penalty. Then, early in the second half, Roger added a further penalty. With it Los Jaguares XV’s lead had been cut to three points.

Peñarol would not score again. Moreover, the team was a man down with Roger yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on. While a man down, Peñarol conceded two tries. Martín Vaca and Tomás Albornoz scored to put Peñarol out of the contest. Then, with 16 mintues remaining Cubilla ran in his second try to finish the scoring.

Both teams will return to action next weekend. In what will be the SLAR Semi Finals Los Jaguares XV will take-on the Olímpia Lions while Peñarol will face Selknam.
