San Diego signs ex-Houston pair Loots and Comptat

The injury-stricken San Diego Legion have reinforced their ranks with Major League Rugby experience. Inside center Tiaan Loots and second row Victor Comptat have joined the team ahead of their match against the New England Free Jacks this weekend. Both played for the Houston SaberCats last year.

Loots was the first choice No12 for the SaberCats in 2020 but was left without a contract following the season. Originally from South Africa, he arrived from Wales where he had been on the books with the Dragons of the Guinness Pro Championship. He fills the gap left by Dylan Audsley, who underwent season-ending surgery on his ankle last week.

Comptat began his MLR career with Austin in 2018 before moving to Houston the following season. He had most recently been playing in France with Marcq. The former USA u20 international stands a lofty 6’8″ (2.04m) and bolsters the Legion’s options at lock while Joshua Furno remains on loan with Biarritz.

San Diego have seen three key players fall to serious injuries in recent weeks. Along with Audsley, Chris Robshaw dislocated his shoulder in his MLR debut while Nate Augspurger injured his ankle in the opening minutes against LA this past weekend.
