RUNY re-signs veteran back Chris Mattina

Rugby United New York have confirmed the re-signing of versatile back Chris Mattina for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old native of Manhattan returns for a third campaign having been one of the club’s most reliable performers in their first two seasons.

Mattina signed on with RUNY after leaving the Eagles Sevens residency program in Chula Vista. He played a crucial role in the team’s immediate success, starting 12 games in 2019 when they made the Semi Final. This past season he started all five games, scoring a try against Houston in Week Four.

Though he is most at home in the midfield, Mattina’s ability to play across the backline has proved invaluable for RUNY. He has started MLR games at both midfield spots as well as flyhalf, wing, and fullback. Mattina is also a capable goal kicker with 18 conversions during the 2019 campaign.
