Laureus nominate Argentina for World Team of the Year

Laureus have shortlisted Argentina for the 2021 World Team of the Year. The nomination marks the first time ever that Los Pumas have been nominated for the award.

The nomination follows Los Pumas’ historic victory over New Zealand in 2020. The 25-15 triumph was Argentina’s first win over the All Blacks.

Winning the match marked the ultimate prize for two reasons. First, Argentina had never before beaten New Zealand. Second, the players had overcome all odds just to be able to play in the Tri Nations. This involved multiple quarantines in different countries and no match preparation before arriving in Australia. South Africa pulled out of the tournament.

Los Pumas are one of six teams nominated for the 2021 World Team of the Year award. The other nominees are Bayern Munich (soccer), Kansas City Chiefs (NFL), Liverpool (soccer), Los Angeles Lakers (NBA), and Mercedes Petronas (Formula One).

Laureus states that it is a global organization that celebrates sporting excellence and uses the power of sport to transform the lives of children and young people. In addition, it has has three core elements which all work together to celebrate sporting excellence and to use the power of sport to change the world.
