Martín Roger will play in the 2021 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby. It’s with Peñarol, however, not the Olímpia Lions with whom the Argentine playmaker will suit up. The 23-year-old is joining the Uruguayan franchise for the upcoming season.
Martín Roger’s regular position is fly half. He comes from the northern Argentine city of Santiago del Estero and is a product of Santiago Lawn Tennis. The same rugby club produced Pumas Facundo Isa, Tomás Lezana, and Juan Manuel Leguizamón.
Roger looms as an ideal fit for Peñarol. The Uruguayan professional rugby team has Felipe Etcheverry on the roster. Cover also comes in the form of test fullback Rodrigo Silva.
With 6 caps, Etcheverry is a player for the immediate future for his country. He started in the position in 2020, doing so with Felipe Berchesi unavailable and Juan Manuel Cat having stepped away from professional rugby.
Peñarol’s roster for 2021 contains five Argentine players. Roger joins prop Facundo Pomponio, second-rower Nahuel Milan, flanker Conrado Roura, and scrum half Manuel Nogués. The remaining 39 players are Uruguayans.
