Rodolfo Ambrosio is to coach Los Cafeteros Pro. The 59-year-old for Argentina will be in charge of Colombia’s first professional rugby team. Ambrosio joins Los Cafeteros Pro after previously having been Los Pumitas Coach, Brazil’s Head Coach, having coached in Italy and having played for Italy from 1987-1989.
Ambrosio coached Brazil during the recent golden age. He was appointed Head Coach of Brazil in 2014 and left the post as the most successful Brazilian coach in history. Under Ambrosio Brazil defeated the USA in 2016; Canada in 2017, and 2019; Belgium in 2017; Portugal in 2017, and 2019; the Argentina XV in 2018; and the Georgia XV in 2018.
Ambrosio’s replacement was Fernando Portugal. The former Brazilian test center was also Head Coach of Corinthians for the 2019 SLAR season. Not only does he know Ambrosio well but now they will be in charge of rivals in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR).
Los Cafeteros Pro will debut in the 2021 SLAR season. The team’s addition takes the 2021 SLAR season from five to six teams. The league will be played from March to May 2021.
The Colombian team is to feature Colombians and Argentina players. Los Cafeteros Pro and Paraguay’s pro team will have priority in the SLAR player draft.
