Montevideo to host South American RWC 2023 qualifiers

The South American RWC 2023 qualifiers will be played exclusively in Montevideo. Both tournaments scheduled for June and July of 2021 will take place at the Estadio Charrúa.

The first round will be a pre-qualifying tournament in June 2021. Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Paraguay will compete with the top two advancing to round two. Round two will be the 2021 South American 4 Nations. Uruguay and the Argentina XV will be joined by the two qualifying teams from round one.

The winning team from round two will be South American 1 (SAR 1). This team will advance to round three of the RWC 2023 qualifiers. SAR 2 will not be eliminated. Instead, this team will also advance. The team that finishes outside of the top two, excluding the Argentina XV, will be eliminated.

An outcome of the decision means that only Uruguay will hav home advantage in South American RWC 2023 qualifying. Uruguay competed in the past two RWCs and have played in four RWCs overall. Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Paraguay are yet to qualify for a RWC.
