Juan Manuel Cat steps away from High Performance program

Juan Manuel Cat has stepped away from Uruguay’s High Performance program. The 24-year-old has decided to prioritize work over rugby. He has not retired from international rugby and nor has see closed the door on professional rugby.

Cat joined Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) side Peñarol at the start of the year. He had a job offer at the same time. The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. For Cat it meant he accepted the opportunity.

He remains playing rugby, but not training at the Charrúa Center. Instead, he is involved with his club, Old Boys. It is there where he is now focusing on his rugby.

Cat played for Uruguay at RWC 2019. He started at outside center against Fiji in Kamaishi, Georgia in Kumagaya, and Wales in Kumamoto. 26 of Cat’s 24 caps have been at outside center. The eight others came at fly half. He filed in for Felipe Berchesi when the French-based player was not available.

Neither Cat nor Berchesi featured in the recent South American 4 Nations or the home series against Spain. Felipe Etcheverry was the fly half. The outside center position was occupied by Nicolás Freitas. The former covered fullback at RWC 2019 and the latter was a starting winger.
