Matías Moroni out of Rugby Championship

Matías Moroni is out of the Rugby Championship. The former Jaguares center suffered a sprained knee in training in Uruguay. He will not play for Argentina in 2020. He is to next play for his new club, the Leicester Tigers.

The 29-year-old Moroni joined the Leicester Tigers from Los Jaguares. He had intended on remaining in his native Buenos Aires. The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. He is now a father and will not remain in Super Rugby.

The future of Los Jaguares remains unclear. Many of the team’s players have departed for Europe in a player exodus. Additional names are expected to follow. One is Julián Montoya who has been linked to the Leicester Tigers.

The Tigers are also home to Tomás Lavanini and Facundo Gigena. Lavanini has been ruled out of the Rugby Championship with an ankle injury. Gigena missed out on selection. It comes as a minor surprise considering his performance in England. He is, nonetheless, uncapped. 2020 Puma Joaquín Díaz Bonilla will join Leicester for the new season.

Moroni held down a starting position for Argentina in 2019. He was the regular right winger in Mario Ledesma’s team. He has been a long-time servant for Argentina.Since debuting in 2014 he has earned 47 caps. He started against Ireland in Los Pumas’ RWC 2015 Quarter Final victory.

Without Moroni there will be options for players at both outside center and on the wing.
