Rugby United New York have confirmed Ireland u20 international Evan Mintern for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. It’s a re-signing of sorts, with the 24-year-old initially meant to join the team for the 2020 season but a complication in acquiring visa approval meant he did not make an appearance before the campaign was suspended.
The 6’4″ (1.93m) powerhouse arrives from All-Ireland League first division side Cork Constitution, where he won the 2019 AIL Division 1A title as a No8. Also capable of playing lock, he should replace the departed Mathieu Bastareaud at the back of the RUNY scrum.
Mintern represented Ireland at the 2016 World Rugby u20 Championship, and subsequently played with Munster ‘A’ for two seasons in the British & Irish Cup. He joins an Irish contingent at RUNY that includes the likes of prop James Rochford, center Will Leonard, and notably Head Coach Greg McWilliams.
