Three North Americans players have been named to the official HSBC Dream Team for the 2019-2020 Women’s World Sevens Series. Canadians Britt Benn and Ghislaine Landry are joined by USA star Kristi Kirshe. The team is named despite the circuit featuring only five stops due to COVID-19.
All three were, in fact, selected together as backs in the Dubai Dream Team in December. It would be the only time Kirshe was selected this season but her consistently excellent form merited recognition. She scored 17 tries across the five tournaments, good enough for 7th overall. This is the first end-of-year Dream Team selection for the 25-year-old.
Benn, 31, is named to the overall Dream Team for a second consecutive year and third overall. Following Dubai she was selected as a forward in the Cape Town and Hamilton tournaments. The Napanee, Ontario, native scored seven tries but is largely recognized for her dominance in the contact area.
For Landry, 32, this is another notch in an illustrious career. The circuit’s all-time leading scorer is named in the overall Dream Team for a fourth time, joining Benn in collecting repeat honors. She finished second in scoring this past season, trailing the USA’s Alev Kelter by only a single point.
Indeed Kelter might be considered the most unlucky Americas player to miss out. Filling out the roster are Australian forward Sharni Williams and three from series champions New Zealand – Ruby Tui, Stacey Fluhler, and Tyla Nathan-Wong.
