The Toronto Arrows have confirmed the addition of scrumhalf Jason Higgins for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. He arrives from Cork Constitution, who he helped win All-Ireland League titles in both 2017 and 2019. Also confirmed are the re-signings of lock Mike Sheppard and wing Johnny Sheridan
Higgins, 25, had originally signed with Rugby United New York for the 2020 season but could not obtain a visa before the season was cut short. Qualified for Canada through his father, he will instead land on the north side of Lake Ontario. With Andrew Ferguson already confirmed and Jamie Mackenzie possibly to continue as well, the Arrows will have strong options at No9 in 2021.
This past season did not go as planned for Sheppard. The 31-year-old returned from his first Rugby World Cup in top form but a red card for a dangerous tackle in Week 2 against the Houston SaberCats earned him a suspension, and COVID-19 would arrive before Sheppard would get a chance to make amends.
Sheridan is also entering his third season with the Arrows. He featured in only two matches in 2020 but made the most of his opportunities. The 26-year-old was one of the team’s best performers in the win over Houston, starting in the No11 shirt, and came off bench the following week against Seattle.
