The Houston SaberCats have confirmed the return of South African pair De Wet Roos and Kyle Breytenbach for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. Both players continue contracts signed in the fall of 2019, with Roos arriving from Australia and Breytenbach from Austin.
Roos, 29, captained the Cats in his first MLR campaign. The scrumhalf was a commanding presence for the team with his aggressive attacking play. His two-try performance against Toronto in Week 2 was a highlight, and he would play 99% of all possible minutes over the five games.
Playing only a few minutes less was Breytenbach. After finding himself largely in the back row at Austin, the 27-year-old was used exclusively as a lock by Houston. He helped anchor the right side of a dominant scrum while also making a big impression in the loose.
Houston has now confirmed nine returning players for 2021. Preceding the duo were flankers Luke Beauchamp and Cecil Garber, flyhalf Sam Windsor, wing Malacchi Esdale, and versatile backs Kieran Farmer, Matías Freyre, and Zach Pangelinan.
