The New England Free Jacks have announced the signing of Scottish dual-international Dougie Fife on a deal that runs through the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He arrives directly from the Guinness Pro 14, where he has played for Edinburgh since 2012.
Fife, 29, was a standout winger with the Scotland u20s before achieving senior international honors in 2014. He debuted against Wales in the Six Nations and scored his first test try against France the following year. Further starts against England and Ireland followed but Fife took a hiatus from XVs in 2016.
His destination was the World Sevens Series, and Fife’s impact was immediate as he led Scotland to a first ever Cup Final victory at London. After returning full-time to Edinburgh in 2017 Fife earned a recall to the test side and he won caps against the USA and Argentina, scoring a try in each match.
Though his early career was spent mostly on the wing, more recently Fife has been used at fullback where his 6’2″ (1.87m) frame has proved useful under the high ball. He follows former Sharks captain Tera Mtembu in signing for New England, with the next announcement set for Thursday.
