Two pieces of history was made by Los Pumas in the 2015 Rugby Championship. Argentina claimed their first ever win over South Africa in a test match. The match in question was in Durban and saw Juan Imhoff becoming the first player to score a hat-trick against the Springboks.
The tries underlined how well the Argentine left winger reads that game. His first try saw him provigind a support line for Tomás Cubelli. The scrum-half broke through the forwards and passed to Imhoff who had at the speed to score before Willie Le Roux could catch him.
Try number two again saw Cubelli providing an assist; this time Imhoff finished off the work started by the scrum. The forwards were in control with Marcos Ayerza outperforming Vincent Koch. This one battle was the gateway to the advancing scrum. N8 Leonardo Senatore ran from the back, attracted two defenders and passed to Cubelli. Senator’s run caught the Springboks unprepared as the last defender went to tackle Cubelli, enabling Imhoff to score unopposed.
Never turn your back on a referee; this rule is taught from a young age, yet sometimes it is forgotten. In the case of Imhoff’s third try referee Romain Poite blew the whistle for time on. Juan Martín Hernández made the observation that Jesse Kriel was not in position marking the right wing defense. This enabled Hernández to tap and pass to Imhoff who toughed down in the corner.
