Known the world over for winning the Top 14 twice with Castres, Rodrigo Capó Ortega ha a tremendous career. The Uruguayan second-rower played N8 for his country at RWC 2003. He appeared in all four matches of the competition for Los Teros.
He genuinely stood out at the back of the scrum, though it was the second-row where he played for the majority of his career. He debuted in 2000 in the second-row for Uruguay, though did play N8 from 2003-2009.
RWC 2003 was Capó Ortega’s only RWC appearance. He did captain the side in the RWC 2007 qualifiers and come out of international retirement for the RWC 2015 qualifiers against Russia, and RWC 2019 qualifiers against Canada. In doing so he helped his country successfully qualify only to miss both RWC tournaments.
Against Samoa in RWC 2003 Capó Ortega scored after Uruguay pressured a Samoan scrum feed. Samoa’s Steve So’oialo was under pressure from Teros flanker Marcelo Gutierez and would lose control. Capó Ortega picked up the loose ball and ran to the line, getting past the attempted tackle of fullback Tanner Vili.
