Los Ceibos debut with a bang

Los Ceibos debuted with a bang, defeating Los Pumitas 97-17 in their first ever rugby match. The fixture was a warm-up game two weeks out from the start for the inaugural Súper Liga Americana e Rugby (SLAR) season.

The SLAR will begin on March 06. On that date Los Ceibos are to have home advantage against the Olímpia Lions, an occasion which will mark the beginning of Paraguayan professional rugby and see Argentina’s second professional side play its first match in a professional league.

In today’s match against Los Pumitas, the fixture was divided into three periods, rather than two halves. In the first of these tries were scored by fullback Juan Bautista Daireaux, winger Martín Cancelliere, and No8 Santiago Montagner.

Los Pumitas rebounded to open their account before Los Ceibos crossed for more tries with Facundo Cordero seeing Los Ceibos go 31-12 ahead.

The SLAR side extended their lead in the second period of play. The injection of wingers Leopoldo Herrera and Mateo Carreras saw a flood of tries, including two to both of the players. With it they went to 66-17 at the end of the second period and converted it into a 97-17 win at the end of the third.

Before focusing on the Olímpia Lions, Los Ceibos have one more warm-up fixture. It is to be next Friday against Córdoba clubs Palermo Bajo and Cordoba Athletic. The unique fixture will see Los Ceibos playing for 40 minutes each against both of the teams.
